What does it mean to have body awareness?
The Six Dimensions of Body Awareness
Body awareness isn't simply "noticing" your body; it's a dynamic, interconnected skill set involving your physical, emotional, and environmental realities. It includes the ability to recognize, understand, and respond to your internal signals.
Here are the six dimensions that define Body Awareness and lead to Body Wisdom:
Posture and Movement: The ability to pay attention to how your body is moving and positioned during any activity.
Alignment and Stability: The skill of noticing your body's alignment, balance, and stability in any given moment.
Sensation Awareness: Paying attention to internal physical sensations, including:
Breathing: General awareness of your breathing patterns and sensations.
Tactile Feelings: Sensations like feeling tense, light, warm, cold, sore, relieved, dizzy, or intense.
Body Language and Expression: Awareness of your current postures and non-verbal expressions, such as frowning, hunched shoulders, clenched hands, voice pitch (loud/quiet/trembling), or walking speed.
Environmental Influence: An understanding that factors like smell, sound, weather, food, and mood directly influence your body's reactions. For example, recognizing that sadness might manifest as a tightened chest or a drop in your chin and voice.
Adjustment and Care: The ability to notice when a posture or action creates an adverse effect and commit to adjusting or changing your body, emotions, thoughts, or environment for a positive outcome.

Body awareness isn’t just noticing or recognizing the body; it also includes the ability to identify and understand the nature of the body’s relationship with the mind, emotions, and environment. And finally, it includes committing to change and taking care of yourself and your relationships with others.
The Profound Benefits of Body Awareness
Having the skill to adjust and balance your body allows various operations...
You will recognize when you are becoming stressed. Your joints may be contracted or move out of their normal positions; tense shoulders; clenched hands or teeth; frowning; tightening the jaw; contracting the abdomen, etc. You will be able to relax. This will have a positive effect on the body in the long run.
Your appearance and demeanor will foster a positive self-image and create a good impression on others.
You will be more aware of the relationship between body actions and emotions. For instance, when you are worried or afraid, you tend to hunch or contract your abdomen.
Similarly, your awareness of the thoughts that shape emotions, sensations, and bodily actions will improve.
The chance of accidents and injuries will be reduced
You will develop the skill to notice your body's and mind's capacities and limitations.
You will be able to help your body recover from injury faster. When you know which part of your body needs special treatment or which posture is best for your body, you will be more careful with your movements.
You will have confidence that your body gives you the power you need to take care of what matters to you.
You will develop a sensitivity to the body language of others
Your self-love, self-confidence, and independence will increase.
